Dad put the Specialized Epic 9 Expert to the test at Clayton Park, CCC, CERES Park, and White Clay Creek. This lightweight XC mountain bike impressed us with its suspension adjustments, electronic shifting, and ability to handle fast trails, rough terrain, and jumps.
OUR RATING
4.3 / 5
BEST FOR
Riders looking for an ultralight XC mountain bike that climbs fast, feels nimble, and can handle more than just smooth trails.
WHAT WE LIKED
- Lightweight frame that makes climbing feel effortless.
- Suspension lockout and adjustments for different terrain.
- Electronic shifting for quick, smooth gear changes.
WHAT COULD BE BETTER
- The stock tires weren’t our favorite, so we swapped them out.
- The gear selector pod could use a better setup.
First impressions
The first thing Dad noticed was just how light this bike is! The color also looks much better in person than in photos. We were especially excited about the suspension lockout and adjustment options, which let you fine-tune the bike for different riding conditions.
On the trail
We’ve ridden the Epic 9 Expert at Clayton Park, CCC, CERES Park, and White Clay Creek, and it’s been a blast. It’s fast, responsive, and incredibly nimble on the trail. Despite its lightweight XC design, it can handle some pretty harsh jumps and rough terrain, too.
The suspension adjustments are a standout feature, giving Dad options to adapt the bike to different trails and riding styles. Whether climbing or pushing the pace through the rough stuff, this bike makes riding a lot of fun.
Our biggest disappointment was the stock tires. We decided to swap them out for a different set, which we’ll cover in a future Trail Legacy review.
The details
The Epic 9 Expert is all about keeping things light, fast, and fun. Its lightweight design makes a noticeable difference when climbing, while the adjustable suspension helps it handle a variety of trail conditions.
We also really like the electronic shifting. It adds to the bike’s modern feel and makes changing gears quick and easy.
Two things we’d change? The stock tires and the setup of the gear selector pod. Neither takes away from how much we enjoy riding this bike, but they’re worth mentioning.
THE VERDICT
Would we ride it again? Every ride!
The Specialized Epic 9 Expert earns a 4.3/5 from Trail Legacy. Dad loves how light, fast, and capable it feels, especially with the suspension adjustments and electronic shifting.
If you’re looking for a mountain bike that climbs quickly, feels nimble, and practically disappears beneath you because of its low weight, this bike is worth checking out. And don’t let its lightweight XC design fool you—it can handle some rough trails and jumps, too!
Our advice? The bike is a blast right out of the gate, but we’d look at different tires to get the setup just right.
